Michael Langley joins Burns & Scalo as consultant
February 4, 2010Pittsburgh Business Times – by Kris B. Mamula
The Burns & Scalo companies have hired former Allegheny Conference CEO Michael Langley as a consultant, the real estate and commercial roofing companies announced Wednesday.
Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services Inc. and Burns and Scalo Roofing hired Langley to identify business opportunities in real estate and construction. Langley left the Allegheny Conference in March 2009 after serving as CEO for six years. His new title is strategic partner.
“They’re good guys,” Langley said. “I’m excited about working with them. They’re a partner and a client.”
After leaving the Allegheny Conference, Langley formed the Langley Group, a consultancy that advises regional organizations promoting economic development. He is advising groups in Pennsylvania and other states, and conducts training for regional organizations.
“He understands the needs of economic development drivers, and is positioned to introduce the capabilities of both Burns & Scalo companies to those decision makers in many regions,” the companies said in a prepared statement. “Few people know the economic development and construction markets as well as Mike does, or are as visible in those market segments outside western Pennsylvania as he is.”
Based in the Green Tree suburb of Pittsburgh, Burns & Scalo Real Estate is among the largest such firms in the region. Burns & Scalo Roofing is the biggest commercial roofing and sheet metal company in the region.

US now ranked 2nd to Switzerland in Global Competitiveness Index
September 14, 2009Check out the new Global Competitiveness Report at the World Economic Forum site: http://www.weforum.org
Look under the “Initiatives” Tab and select “Global Competitiveness”. The video clips give a great summary.
The Global Competitiveness Index has been developed to rank countries, but I have found that the same criteria used to rank countries can been applied to regional economies as a means of comparison.
Like countries, classified as either developing, factor driven, or innovation driven, our global regions also can be classified in those terms.
Check out the report and let me know what you think!!!
Good book for Sustainable Prosperity thinkers
September 12, 2009If you haven’t read Tom Friedman’s “Hot, Flat, and Crowded”, I highly recommend it. I used it in the course I taught at the University of Pittsburgh (Graduate School of Public and International Affairs) PIA 2755 Regional Development and the Global Economy. It will get you thinking on what businesses and regional organizations must do to address the confluence of factors in our future: global climate change, population growth, and the continued rise of the middle class globally.
